for nightshow

Before the trip to hockenheim we decided to modify the Dukes to look better in the nightshow. Both Dukes were equipped with four titanium flares

To ignite the flares i build four triggering switches next to the main power switch. There is also a switch to arm the flare triggers.

Electrically ignited flares are connected under the rear seat.

The flare arming switch also puts on LED light strips to show off the engine. These LED light were ofcourse not even noticed next to the fire show of Hannes.

NOISE !

Now we got new silencers from the factory, for both Dukes. Nice sound, just like you would expect in a show. Noise killers removed from our Dukes for more noise.

These are KTM Powerparts straight out of catalog and they come with noise killers installed. With noise killers installed the sound isn't that loud, so it should be ok for streets. Everything you need is in the box and it is very easy to install.

idle

690 Duke has an electrical throttle and there is no cables coming out from the throttle handle. This kind of fly-by-wire system had me thinking about making an electrical circuit to fool the throttle position motors to give more idle speed when switched to on. My knowledge in electronics and the info i got from the system and it's components was not enough to make that circuit. So i decided to go for the easy and simple mechanical solution

The idle screw just pushes the throttle position sensors forward to ask for more power from the ECU. I hope this rivetnut won't break in our use.

Stunt pegs

Today we got the stuntpegs for Dukes. These solid pegs are also acting as crashpads. Pegs are made of BMX bicycle pegs and the frame is DIY iron.

Wheelie bar

For doing wheelies and to give those nice titanium sparks we built wheeliebars for both Dukes. Wheeliebar is measured to the length that puts the bike in 12 o'clock position when bar hits the ground. This makes it possible to park the bike vertically. Saves a lot of parking space.

The new titanium pieces still shining and not scraped.

Rear brakes

The handbrake modification for both Dukes was made from original KTM parts. New rearbrake cylinder and bracket was welded to the original rearbrake bracket. Brakeline from the extra brake cylinder goes directly to the handbrake master cylinder. The loose wire is from the ABS system which is not in use anymore. The ABS components are still located under the tank and they have no affect on the braking anymore. Original brakelines still run through the ABS unit. In future i plan to take out all the ABS components to get rid of those loose wires and extra brakelines.

The handbrake master cylinder is also a KTM original part. The lever is still unchanged. It will be shortened in order to keep it from breaking the expencive handbrake master cylinder when bike is crashed.

We got some powerparts from the factory. stuntcage, bugspoiler both straight from KTM powerparts catalog.

I painted them white to give more surface to sponsor stickers. We also got the front forks back. now they have more damping while the spring tension is same as before.

Arcticmainos company made the stickers just before the american car show. This is how they look now.

I took the forks off for adjustment. They will be adjusted by KTM.

FIRST STUNT MOD

The dukes ignition key is located between tank and the upper t-clamp. This is not a good place if you are stuntriding and sometimes sitting on the tank.

While waiting for the stickers, i decided to get rid of the ignition lock and replace it with a switch.

Switch is nicely located under the original fairing, so there will be no accidental turnig off the ignition.

Final gear ratio

Stock gear ratio is 16/40. that means 16 teeth on the front and 40 teeth on the rear sprocket. We changed that to 14/52. We'll have to try if this is enough for us Sprockets and chain are straight from the KTM powerparts catalog.

First thing was to take out the parts that needed new paint. First weekend and parts from two Dukes were ready and waiting for the painter. Now all we can do is wait. Wait for the stuntparts arrive from KTM and the painter to finnish his job.

After heavy paintshopping there are about 15 different versions of the new colors for the Duke. Here is one of them.

We finally got our KTM 690 Dukes straight from the factory. We got two bikes and both of them are going to be modified to stunt use. In this new blog we are writing about the build and later on everything else related to Dusters and the Dukes. The two new bikes looked like this when they arrived.
